House Science Committee and Chair Lamar Smith should focus on science, not politics #climate @NOAA

lamarChairman of House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology Lamar Smith thinks that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) should focus on studying weather patterns rather than climate. Lamar Smith stated this, and a lot of misinformation, at a budget hearing for NOAA this week. Clearly Lamar Smith has failed Earth Science 101. While climate and weather are not the same thing, climate change can heavily influence weather patterns, and has been linked more and more strongly to EXTREME weather events.

“Instead of hyping a climate change agenda, NOAA should focus its efforts on producing sound science and improving methods of data collection,” said Smith. “NOAA should prioritize areas of research that significantly impact Americans today, such as ways to improve weather forecasting. Unfortunately, climate alarmism often takes priority at NOAA.”

Kathryn Sullivan, head of NOAA responded to Smith:

“NOAA forecasts help communities prepare and respond to weather events, including the severe storms that swept through Texas last year, tornado events across the mid-west and Florida, and the recent winter storm that struck the Northeast,” writes Dr. Sullivan in her statement. “But the greater demand for our services goes beyond just extreme weather.”

But perhaps the best response came from Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson:

“It is clear to me that this investigation is unfounded, and it is being driven by ideology and other agendas,” says Johnson. “The majority has asserted, without offering any credible evidence, that NOAA and the climate science community at large are part of some grand conspiracy to falsify data in support of the significant role humans play in climate change. However, the overwhelming body of scientific evidence across many different fields has shown that this is not the case.”

In our opinion, Lamar Smith and the House Science Committee are an embarrassment to the American people, and the amazing science that is done here. It is very sad that NOAA and NOAA scientists are constantly being harassed by this political entity. (Check out @HouseAntiScienc on twitter)

Carbon dioxide levels continue to set records – up 3.05 ppm in 2015. @NOAA #ActOnClimate

More bad, and yet unsurprising, news from NOAA this week re:climatechange (Image: CO2 computer model adapted from NASA). Levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide are going up and up, and at record breaking levels… womp womp.

The annual growth rate of atmospheric carbon dioxide measured at NOAA’s Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii jumped by 3.05 parts per million during 2015, the largest year-to-year increase in 56 years of research.

In another first, 2015 was the fourth consecutive year that CO2 grew more than 2 ppm, said Pieter Tans, lead scientist of NOAA’s Global Greenhouse Gas Reference Network.

“Carbon dioxide levels are increasing faster than they have in hundreds of thousands of years,” Tans said. “It’s explosive compared to natural processes.”

This news comes after the recent news that 2015 was the warmest year on record and that winter in the US had above average temps. CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL!! and its going to get worse 😦

@NOAA validates what you already knew about this winter… its warm. #fewersnowmen

tave-anom-201512-201602NOAA reports that this winter has been very, very warm, especially when compared with previous average temperatures. This shouldn’t surprise anyone that is paying attention (or anyone who leaves their house now and then), given that NOAA and NASA found 2015 be the warmest year on record. Climate change… ya think??

  • Forty-six states across the contiguous U.S. had a winter temperature that was above average. Much-above average winter temperatures were observed across the West, Great Plains, Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast. Each of the six New England states had a winter temperature that was record warm.

  • Alaska had its second warmest December-February with a statewide temperature of 14.2°F, 10.6°F above average. Several locations across Alaska were record warm including Barrow and King Salmon, while Anchorage and Juneau had their second warmest December-February.

Lamar Smith and @HouseScience are bullying @NOAA climate scientists -#ISupportNOAA #SciCheck @factcheckdotorg

Representative Lamar Smith, the Chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, has been the subject of a number of CauseScience posts. The House Committee continues spreading misinformation and seemingly abusing its power, now to bully NOAA climate scientists – Scicheck has summarized the anti-science misinformation and bullying on (which they have also done in the past).

Rep. Lamar Smith, chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, has made several inaccurate or misleading claims about climate science in an ongoing battle with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Smith, who has long rejected mainstream climate science, is using the committee’s subpoena power in an attempt to obtain internal communications at NOAA regarding a June study published in the journal Science. In his statements on this issue, Smith has claimed that “climate data has clearly showed [sic] no warming for the past two decades,” and that NOAA has “altered the data to get the results they needed to advance this administration’s extreme climate change agenda.”

In fact, there has been substantial warming over the past two decades, and NOAA’s adjustments to its data are well-studied, publicly available, peer-reviewed methods for obtaining the best possible temperature readings.

I’m sure that Rep. Lamar Smith and the House Committee are more qualified to judge a paper in SCIENCE than the peer-reviewers who are also climate scientists….. NOT! For a scary look at the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, check out their twitter feed. Wow… just wow.

New Sea World Ad shares ‘facts’ about captive Killer Whales #lies #science

The above ad for Sea World pretends to give lots of facts about the Orcas (Killer Whales) that reside in the parks owned by Sea World. Problem is… most Killer Whale science and scientists don’t agree with Sea World’s convenient, and probably made-up ‘facts.’ The Dodo has done a terrific job summarizing what is wrong with the Sea World ‘Facts.’ Check it out in full here. My favorite 2 below.

“I wouldn’t work here if they weren’t.”

Thriving, that is. Yet dozens of orca whale trainers have left the park in protest of the practice of keeping orca whales in captivity, many of them becoming outspoken activists against SeaWorld. One trainer recently described the company as having a “cult-like” atmosphere in which he felt obliged to stay in order to ensure the animals were being properly cared for.

“Government research shows they live just as long as whales in the wild.”

The country’s foremost oceans agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, reports that wild male orca whales typically live to 30 years old but can reach age 60, and females typically live to 50 years old by can reach 100 in the Pacific Northwest, where many of SeaWorld’s early whales were caught. Marine mammal scientist Naomi Rose has explained that SeaWorld is “cherry picking data” when it claims that its whales live comparable life spans to those in the wild.

In contrast, SeaWorld representatives have been filmed repeatedly misrepresenting the age of orca whales in the wild.

NOAA: 2015 had second warmest January by global average temperature on record #climate

January 2015 had the second warmest averaged global temperature on record. Summary here at NOAA!

The globally averaged temperature over land and ocean surfaces for January 2015 was the second highest among all years since record keeping began in 1880. The January global land surface temperature was also second highest on record, while the global ocean surface temperature was third highest.

Holiday lights… FROM SPACE!

From NOAA/NASA, check out these satellite images of holiday lights around the world!

Around many major U.S. cities, nighttime lights shine 20 to 50 percent brighter during Christmas and New Year’s when compared to light output during the rest of the year, as seen in the satellite data. In some Middle Eastern cities, nighttime lights shine more than 50 percent brighter during Ramadan, compared to the rest of the year.

Global temperature in 2014 continues record warmth – October ties as warmest ever! YIKES!!!

2014 continues to set records for the warmest year on record for average global temperatures. So far May, June, August, and September have been the warmest of each of those months ever recorded. Now October has tied as the warmest October ever recorded. For more info on this, and how it continues to show that there is not a global warming hiatus, check out Tom Yulsman’s blog – ImaGeo!
