Do you think science is important? Or that science is cool? This blog is about all things science, how science is viewed in society, and what we can do to improve science.
As scientists (see below) and people that are passionate about science, we think that science needs to be a higher priority. Science is regularly ignored or misconstrued, which means science and especially science funding suffer. Thus, it seems that society desperately needs a cause supporting science. This blog will attempt to draw attention to the cause that is science. beCause Science. We will also post information about science policy, advocacy, commentary and interesting science news that we find awesome!

crestwind24 – I obtained a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania studying genetic risk factors and mechanisms that are involved in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). I am currently a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University, and study the development and maintenance of motor neurons related to ALS and other motor neuron diseases. I also study a model of neuronal aging in the hopes of understanding how and why neurons age. I am fascinated by the brain, how it develops, changes, and then ages. I enjoy exercising (running, skiing, yoga, and going to the gym), spending time outside (when not in lab), exploring New York City, traveling, and listening to music while doing all of these things.
psgurel – I obtained my Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Dartmouth College where I focused on small protein factors that influence the actin cytoskeleton to behave in a certain manners. Currently, I’m a postdoctoral fellow at the NHLBI where again, I’m focusing on the actin cytoskeleton, but this time interested in how actin structure may influence cell motility and migration. On a broader scale, I am fascinated by how life functions on the smallest level (hence why I’m a biochemist) and how understanding fundamental cellular mechanisms can enhance our understanding of human health and disease. In my spare time, I enjoy figure skating, watching and critiquing figure skating, accumulating frequent-flyer miles on Southwest, and attending weddings.
