Science and Figure Skating- a match made in heaven

Figure Skating is clearly one of the best sports of all time… and it’s even more fascinating to check out the science behind the sport.

With a new sensor technology developed by a group in BYU, scientists have determined that figure skaters absorb up to 8x their body weight when landing jumps! This is in contrast to something like running, where athletes only absorb 2-3x their body weight upon impact.  Guess they call them “thunder thighs” for a reason…

The hope is that this technology will be helpful for preventing injuries and getting a better understanding of the specific impacts and strains of the sport.
